Chiropractor for Headaches and Migraines

The occasional headache is something that we all suffer on occasion, whether it’s due to tiredness, a hangover or general dehydration. But some people also suffer from migraines, which are more severe and can trigger numerous other symptoms such as:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Blurry Vision

  • Increased sensitivity to sound and/or light

There’s no hard and fast rule as to the frequency that can alert people who get headaches as to how frequently they endure them. For some people, it might only be two or three times a year, but for others, it might be two or three times a week. While there’s no known cure for migraines, seeking treatment from a qualified and experienced chiropractor for migraines and headaches can help to reduce their intensity and frequency. If you’d like to experience the trusted services of a chiropractor for headaches for yourself, make an appointment to see Dr Balraj Ougra at Back Space Chiropractic in Carlingford, north west of Sydney CBD.

What’s the Difference between a Headache and a Migraine?

Many people have a tendency to use the terms headache and migraine interchangeably. However, with many different types of headaches, get the diagnose correct between the two can make all the world of difference when it comes to the method of treatment a chiropractor for headaches or migraines might administer to their patient:

  • Migraines are typically confined to one side of the head, while headaches are felt throughout the scalp or forehead.

  • Headaches are usually characterised by a dull ache, while migraines are noticeably more intense.

  • Migraine sufferers will likely experience additional symptoms like those listed above.

  • Other headaches types may include Tension Type, Cluster Type and Cervicogenic Headaches coming from your neck and spine.

While the intensity and frequency of headaches and migraines can be reduced with the assistance of chiropractic treatment, an experienced and reputable headache chiropractor will always examine and test their patients to determine whether chiropractic treatment is the most suitable approach for them. The screening process will typically include taking down the patient’s medical history, conducting a physical examination, or possibly undergoing diagnostic testing. If the patient is considered suitable for treatment, then migraine chiropractor Dr Balraj Ougra will move forward with a variety of safe and effective techniques that can help to alleviate headache or migraine pain. In our experience, finding the primary source of your headache/migraine is the key to successful management.

Primary or Secondary Headache

Of the over 300 causes of headache and migraine, the majority of headaches are diagnosed as Tension-Type, Migraine and Neck Headache. These are the most common headache causes and interestingly, can co-exist.

Headaches are classified by the International Headache Society as Primary or Secondary.

Primary headaches are not related to any other problem and include migraines, tension type headaches and cluster headaches.

Secondary headaches are caused by an underlying problem, and can include a post-whiplash headache, neck headache, and drug withdrawal headache. In other words, the headache is a symptom of something else being wrong rather than the cause itself. Treatment for a secondary headache involves treating the source (eg upper neck joints) rather than the headache symptoms.

Multi-Source Headache

It is important to point out that many headache sufferers may suffer multi-source headaches. For example, a Migraine sufferer may simultaneously experience a Tension Type Headache and Neck Headache. Treatment varies depending in the symptoms and headache source.

Correct Diagnosis is Vital

Treatment success depends entirely on an accurate diagnosis. Migraine medications may not ease Tension Type, Cluster or Neck Headaches. Likewise, neck treatment will only ease the neck component of a Migraine.

What’s Causing Your Headaches or Migraine?

Your chiropractor or doctor may recommend that you complete a Headaches - Migraine Questionnaire that will assist in your headache classification, diagnosis and treatment. If you complete this questionnaire and present the results to your chiropractor or doctor it could help to fast track your diagnosis and treatment.
